CAM: Combined Atresia & Microtia Repair

CAM (Combined Atresia & Microtia) surgery provides the option to have hearing restored and an outer ear reconstructed in one single stage of surgery using the Medpor polyethelene surgical technique. Both Dr. Marc Bennett (Atresia/Canalplasty surgeon) and Dr. Scott Stephan (Medpor surgeon) work together on patients at Vanderbilt during this one-day surgical procedure for creating an ear canal, restoring hearing, and creating an outer ear through reconstructive surgery.

Please see detailed information about the Medpor technique for outer ear reconstruction and Canalplasty/Aural Atresia Repair in the menu tab.

*   It is important that the location of the facial nerve be known before considering having rib graft surgery, Medpor, or canalplasty/atresia repair surgery. Damage to the facial nerve during surgery can cause facial paralyses. A CT scan can show the location of the facial nerve prior to having surgery.

In this video from July 2019, Drs. Scott Stephan and Alejandro Rivas Campo discuss candidates for, considerations of, and pros and cons for, Combined Atresia and Microtia (CAM) surgery.
